Our DASH Celebration was recently featured in both the Oxleas internal staff newsletter and is now front-page on the Oxleas intranet website! The news reads...

Bromley’s Dementia Assisting Self Help (DASH) group held a celebration event in March, to mark the wide variety of involvement initiatives the group has led both within Oxleas and in wider community settings.

DASH is an involvement group specifically for people living with dementia. Members use their lived experience to identify issues which are important to them and creatively problem solve. 
They contribute to teaching, training, service design and development, and to research projects.
Following a recent presentation by DASH group at Oxleas’ board meeting, Steve Wedgwood, Chief Estates Officer, attended the DASH celebration event and presented awards of recognition to its members.
Jen Sutton, Older People's Involvement Lead, said: "The event was a fantastic celebration of the immensely valuable involvement work the DASH Group has led and their dedication in championing the voices and perspectives of older people living with dementia."

DASH being featured in these Oxleas communications helps put us on the map and better show off all the amazing work our members do! We're looking forward to many more events and many more mentions in Oxleas newsletters in future!

Bromley Memory Service recently received funding for a new art therapist role. I had the opportunity to join an art therapy taster session and offer feedback as a service user. I found the session very interesting, particularly the part around the history of art therapy in Bexley Hospital, as I used to work as a psychiatrist. I really enjoyed the session and found the therapist to be very good and supportive. When given a prompt to draw my “calm and quiet place”, I drew my mosque, which enabled me to feel relaxed. I found the session very engaging and would encourage my DASH group peers to have a go as I think it’s a great way to keep your mind active when living with dementia. How Religion Helped Me After My Dementia Diagnosis

In 2022, my wife felt that I was forgetful. When we went abroad, she noticed I was a little confused. I then went for a brain scan in March 2023. My assessment was carried out by the Bromley Memory Service, and I was diagnosed with a mild form of mixed Alzheimer's and Vascular dementia. Since then, I have had a different perspective on life. I believe that everyday is a new day and I have strong faith in my religion and believe that everything that happens, Allah has desired for it to happen.  I am a Muslim and my religion is Islam. Islam is the religion to the will of God. Muslims believe there is one God known as Allah. There are 5 pillars of Islam: 1. Shahada (declaration of faith) 2. Salah (prayer) 3. Zakat (giving charity) 4. Swam (fasting) 5. Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). Our prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Quran are interlinked, and we follow the divine revelation of the word of the Quran. Which is the word of God. My Painting of the Bridgeways Building and the Dementia impact.

  When starting my painting, I was confident that I could paint as good as I painted before Dementia. I soon found out I was wrong! My first painting effort of Bridgeways was just not good enough and I decided to start again. My second painting effort, like number one above, was not good enough and I was beginning to think that my Dementia was the reason but I was determined to get it right. My third painting effort was again not good enough which helped me confirm that the Dementia factor was the reason.    After considerable determination, the fourth attempt I accepted to be good enough and as a result I was relieved to think I could still paint to a reasonable standard.  - David
